Important Information about Your Membership!

December 9th, 2014

Dear Members,

On January 1st, 2015, we are officially rolling out an updated membership program. Among the upgrades are retail discounts, training discounts, free services, and additional lane rental savings for Smart and Patriot levels. Membership prices will be rising slightly, along with 2015 lane rental rates, but we are certain you’ll see the value.

What do these changes mean for you? You will see an increase in your annual membership fee – of approximately $20 per year. In return, we are offering Patriot members 10% off retail, gunsmithing, and training purchases, discounted gun rentals, a free private lesson, and two free gun cleanings each year of membership. Smart members will receive a 5% discount on retail, gunsmithing, and training purchases. Smart or Patriot members can still receive 10% off when purchasing two or more memberships at the same time for immediate family members. And, best of all, Smart and Patriot memberships can be upgraded to the new Liberty Membership!
Our new Liberty membership will let you shoot free for only $509.99 annually – you can shoot as often as you like at no additional cost. Not only that, but the membership comes with many benefits, including 15% off all retail merchandise and training, 2 private lessons, 4 gun cleanings, discounted gun rentals and more. Plus you can add on your family members for $369.99 each and they will receive the same benefits! This Liberty membership is a no brainer for our avid shooters. We’re talking savings of more than $1,000 if you shoot twice a week.

Active members will receive the new membership benefits throughout their current membership term. And though lane rates are rising slightly in 2015, your membership lane rates remain at 2014 levels! That means just $20 more gets you savings over lane rate increase AND additional benefits. We know you’ll be happy with our new program.
Stay tuned for more details on new features available in 2015. If you have any questions or concerns, or if you wish to purchase, renew, or upgrade your membership, contact us at info@shootsmarttx.com and include your member ID and name in the email body. [Please note that renewals after December 31st, 2014 will be processed at 2015 rates.] We look forward to serving you throughout 2015.
Thank you for your continued support of Shoot Smart!

Sincerely,

Also on January 1, 2015, Shoot Smart is adjusting prices for annual memberships and lane rentals. We have not changed prices in 3 years. Expenses have risen dramatically since we added private suites at Alliance and remodeled the Grand Prairie range. However, you will not see an increase in member lane rates in 2015! So this coming change does make a membership purchased before December 31st, 2014, all the more valuable.

From the entire team at Shoot Smart, thank you for your business, and for being a part of the Shoot Smart Family

Training Corner: Always Prepared

November 24th, 2014

“You see it on TV and you see it in the movies, but you never think you’re going to be that one.” Those were the words spoken by an Irving resident who was held at gunpoint and forced into his vehicle. A Walmart employee was getting off of work at 2 a.m. when he was forced into his vehicle at gunpoint, instructed to drive to an ATM and withdraw money.

With the holidays right around the corner, it’s vital that you are aware of your surroundings. It’s so easy to become distracted from possible threats that surround you with all of the hustle and bustle of crowded malls and parking lots.

Make yourself less of a target this shopping season by practicing these easy techniques in situational awareness:

• Scan parking lots before you move to your vehicle.
• Sit at tables rather than booths.
• Avoid drive-thru windows.
• Try not to shop alone. Two sets of eyes are better than one.
• While carrying packages, keep one hand empty.
• Keep your cell phones in your pockets, but avoid texting and using social media while in crowded areas.
• Always have some sort of a plan, and plan on that failing.
• Most importantly, do your best to remain calm.

Speaking of staying calm… our victim earlier made it out of his situation by remaining calm and adapting to the situation. He thought of the most public place that he could drive to and pulled into a busy gas station. The criminal realized he was now in a public place with many witnesses. He got out of the truck and ran away. By staying calm and thinking on his toes, the victim was able to completely disrupt his assailants OODA loop, and come out unharmed. Police are still looking for the assailant, who they think is connected to other robberies.

Remember, always be aware of your surroundings, always make yourself a hard target, and don’t let yourself become a victim. Until next time, keep up the training and shoot smart!

CHL Corner: Holiday Tip: Introducing Your Children To Firearms

November 24th, 2014

Odds are if you live the concealed handgun lifestyle you own at least a couple firearms. So it’s important, especially around the holidays when all the family is around, to think about the firearms in your home. Anyone who owns firearms with children in the home face the question – why, when, and how should I introduce my children (or grandchildren) to firearms? And keep in mind that this question is relevant even if you don’t have kids or you don’t have guns in the home – just think about how kids in your home impact your concealed carry lifestyle. Ask yourself, do you know how your child would react if he or she came across a firearm without you around?

To tackle this issue, we look at why, when, and how, one question at a time.

1. WHY should I teach my children about firearms and safety? Firearms may not be an issue at your home, but could be present at other unexpected places. So, providing your child with the tools to handle this situation is very important. Children are naturally curious and will generally know if parents are keeping a secret from them, such as Christmas presents hidden in the house. By teaching your children about firearms safety, how a firearm works, and what the parts are called, you are taking the mystery and secrecy away — and the excitement that goes along with it.

2. WHEN should I begin teaching my children about firearms? Firearms safety should be taught as soon as a child begins to show an interest in guns. If you are a regular visitor to the range or a hunter, this interest may be early in your child’s life as he or she will probably be exposed to firearms sooner. You can begin teaching kids at a young age by explaining what the firearm is, who is allowed to handle it, and when. We allow children age 8 and up to come to the range and shoot with an adult. This is a great age to begin some practical hands-on training with a .22 caliber rifle or handgun, whatever you are most comfortable with. BB guns are also great training tools. Coming to the range with your kids exposes them to the range culture and rules, and allows them to see how to behave appropriately in a range environment.

3. HOW can I teach my child? Children can be taught basic things like safety rules, what a firearm is, and what the parts are called at an early age. A great opportunity to discuss these things could be when cleaning a firearm when seeing guns and shooting action on television, or if the child begins to ask about guns. The NRA developed a program geared towards elementary and middle school age children called the “Eddie Eagle” program. It teaches four simple rules to follow if a child finds a gun.

The rules are:
1. Stop!!
2. Don’t touch
3. Leave the area
4. Tell an adult

These rules are simple and easy for any child to learn.

As kids get older, they can accompany you to the range for hands-on practice and instruction on range etiquette as well as safety training and shooting instruction.

We offer a variety of options for instruction. Children 8 and older can participate in a New Shooter class with a parent accompanying them. Another option is a one-on-one lesson between one of our fantastic instructors and the child and parent. We always recommend that the parent take the class/ lesson with the child so that you can hear what we are teaching and remind your child when you are shooting on your own. We also have youth leagues for kids aged 8 to 15. The league includes firearms instruction, safety instruction, and several weeks of competitive shooting.

When we say that concealed carry is a lifestyle, we truly mean that owning and living with firearms is a great responsibility with many considerations. Please stay safe this holiday season, and as always, don’t hesitate to talk with us if you have questions about your concealed carry lifestyle.

Retail Corner: New Look Coming

October 24th, 2014

Don’t be alarmed! You’re not going crazy. You didn’t hit your head. You are, indeed, walking into the same old Shoot Smart. Well, maybe not quite the same…

By Thanksgiving, our locations will probably look a lot different to many of our long time customers. Why? Because we’re always looking to improve your experience! To accomplish this, we’re going to update our Pro Shops with better displays and easier traffic flows. At Alliance, we’re going to use the Grand Prairie model and replace our small beverage station with a large, credit card capable vending machine. To accommodate this, we’re replacing the staff break room with a customer café area where you can get a cheap cup of coffee, a convenient coke, or a bag of chips. In return, we’re getting more space for seats in our Alliance lounge (now with new carpet) to make you more comfortable.

To spice things up for the impending winter holidays, we are also adding new rental guns. And for anyone who has been with us long enough, you know that means USED GUN SALES!!! More on that in a minute, because we want to tell you about the newest additions! While we have already added the new Sig 320’s, we will soon be adding the new H&K VP9s and the new striker fired LC9-s models. Just arrived, we have a brand new Walther PK380, Bushmaster MOE M4, a Colt MOE MPG AR-15, a Magnum Research Desert Eagle .50AE, and an IWI Tavor bullpup rifle at each location.

Of course, there is only so much room for rental guns. With more coming in, more have to go, and that means a used firearm sale is due. The sale will included only our used range firearms, such as many popular guns from our Glock, Smith & Wesson, Ruger, and Springfield lines. Also on the block, you will find our Kriss Vectors and an assortment of quality brand name AR-15s. The dates and times for the sale will be announced on Facebook and by special e-blast, so make sure you are tuned in.

With Black Friday in our sights, we are preparing to be your one stop shop for your holiday shooting and shopping needs. This year, expect to find gift kits for new and novice shooters, women, and men. These kits will be simple but complete sets to keep your loved ones happy at the range without breaking the bank. We’ll also have plenty of ammo in stock, ready for you and your visiting family. And as always, our team members will be on hand to answer your questions.

So join us this November for some great gift ideas and fun at the range!

Training Corner: Positive Identification

October 24th, 2014

On November 27, 2013, at roughly 4:00 am in the morning, a young couple was woken by their doorbell and what sounded like someone attempting to open the front door. After observing that there was a man wondering outside their home, they called 911 and hid in their bathroom. The dispatcher notified the couple that an officer would be on the scene shortly. After waiting 10 minutes, the trespasser was still attempting to enter their household, so the homeowner grabbed his firearm and went outside to confront the trespasser. Their house was in a low-lit cul-de-sac and all that the homeowner could see was the silhouette of a man with something in his hands. The homeowner gave a verbal warning to the trespasser to leave and stop walking towards him. He then fired four rounds striking the intruder in the chest, killing him.

This story is typical of “stand your ground” and the homeowner was found to be within his rights to defend his home. However, the intruder, as it turned out, was a 72 year old man with Alzheimer’s and the object in his hand was his mail. The 72 year old man had been walking for 3 miles and was confused about where he was. No criminal charges were filed against the homeowner, but understandably, this event changed his life.

When it comes to defending our homes at night, it is paramount to get positive target identification of the threat before firing. Our home defense firearms should always be securely stored with a flashlight, spare keys, and additional options for self-defense in case you are unable to get to the firearm. The use of a flashlight in home defense offers the homeowner (you) an advantage over the threat and assists with positive target identification. Had the homeowner in our story had a flashlight with him, that night may have ended very differently.

If you have never used a firearm in the dark, we offer two classes that can teach you how to manipulate and fire your gun with a flashlight. In our Home Defense class you can learn how to manipulate your firearm and shoot with the lights off. You will learn different flashlight techniques, home defense tactics, and how to use your flashlight in a home defense scenario. We also have the more advanced “Pistol in the Dark” class which will teach you presentation from the holster in the dark, moving and shooting in the dark, different flashlight options, and natural night vision.

CHL Corner: Cutting Corners

October 24th, 2014

I frequently hear people talking about the benefits of getting a CHL from another state like Vermont, Utah, or Florida as opposed to getting a Texas concealed handgun license. Those states have a much less rigorous application process and in some instances do not require a shooting proficiency test. While it may seem easier to go the “Utah” route, you’re really just setting yourself up for confusion and problems in the future.

A major issue with out-of-state licenses, for example, is that none of the previously mentioned states offer classes that teach you about Texas’ firearm laws – something you are required to know when licensed. Sure, the classes may be cheaper. Sure, they may be shorter. You might even be able to take the course online. But you will likely miss a lot of important and specific information about the laws in Texas and that can be dangerous.

Consider this. Out-of-state classes lack information about where concealed carry is illegal specifically in Texas, about the use of force laws specifically in Texas, and about castle doctrine as determined by the state of Texas (these same topics are all covered, in-depth in Texas CHL courses). Make no mistake, failure to abide by the law, even with an out-of-state carry license, will land you in serious trouble.

My best advice is to go above and beyond if you’re thinking about your CHL, and especially if you already hold one. Concealed carry is a lifestyle and a very serious responsibility. If you have your Utah license, consider taking your Texas CHL to fill in the gaps. And always, shoot smart and be safe.
