The 7 C’s For A Smart Purchase

June 3rd, 2014

Are you preparing to purchase a new firearm? Or, have you ever purchased a firearm only to find out it wasn’t the right selection for you?

Generally speaking, selecting and purchasing a firearm should not be a quick decision. Selecting the wrong firearm can be a very costly mistake. We are often faced with many great questions on selecting firearms, so this month I would like to focus on something we call the “7 C’s” in firearm selection.

Comfortable / Controllable– It’s important the pistol fits the shooter. If you do not feel you can get a comfortable grip you will not feel in control of the firearm. Scott Thornton, one of our incredibly experienced instructors, often compares purchasing a firearm to purchasing shoes. For example: Men – would you ever purchase shoes for your wife? Probably not! So the same goes for selecting firearms. It’s very important you take the time to try out a firearm to ensure comfortableness and controllability before you purchase. We offer a selection of nearly 100 firearms for rental and always encourage potential purchasers to “try before you buy”!

Concealable / Carryable– What is the intended purpose of your firearm purchase? Is it strictly for in the home or target practice, or for concealed carry? In many cases you can easily conceal a firearm; however, the weight or size may not make it ideal to carry. Before you make a firearm purchase you should take time to evaluate how and where you plan to conceal and carry to ensure your selection is appropriate for the intended purpose of the firearm.

Caliber / Capacity– Size doesn’t always matter! We often run into questions on which caliber to purchase. Many feel the larger the caliber – the bigger impact. Although a bigger caliber may have more stopping power, depending on the design of the firearm, it may also have more recoil causing one to have less control of the firearm (and thus, less accurate shot groups). So the question should be: Which caliber allows you the ability to maintain positive control of the firearm to quickly and accurately fire a second shot? Again, this is something that should be assessed by testing the firearm before you purchase. Remember the larger the caliber, the less round capacity for most firearms.

Cost– Everyone has a budget. You don’t necessarily need to go with the cheapest, but don’t assume you have to go with the most expensive either. There are hundreds of firearms in all different makes, models, and calibers – take time to evaluate the first 6 C’s above to narrow down your options – then you can assess which ones fall within your budget.

Once again, I can’t emphasize enough, “try before you buy!” If you think you’re ready to buy a firearm but still have questions or concerns on your selection, please take time to consult with one of our customer service representatives for assistance. And remember, once you’ve made your purchase please be sure to check out one of our many training courses offered at Shoot Smart.

Good luck and I look forward to seeing you on the range!

Meet Chris! Gunsmith Extraordinare

June 3rd, 2014

Chris Graves, gunsmith, has been with Shoot Smart since May of 2012. He joined our team after leaving a local competitor, and Chris has been invaluable to the Shoot Smart model ever since. Starting in mid-2012 with only a gun cleaning tank, a few tools, and a tent, Chris quickly got to work building a name for himself as quick, reliable, and honest. In many cases, Chris goes the extra mile with manufacturers and vendors to make sure his customers get the best service possible. Today, Chris is operating out of our Grand Prairie facility, which offers his budding gunsmith shop more workspace. He can still be found at the Alliance/Fort Worth location, and holds office hours – 5pm-8pm every Tuesday at Alliance, and 9am-12pm Saturdays at Grand Prairie.

We talked with Chris about his experience at Shoot Smart:

Q: What brought you to the Shoot Smart team?
A: I was offered an opportunity to grow with the company. They didn’t have a gunsmith when I came on board, making me the head gunsmith. Starting the new gunsmith shop at Shoot Smart was too good to pass up.

Q: How long have you been a gunsmith?
A: I’ve been gunsmithing for 9 years, and I have worked with some really exceptional gunsmiths. That’s the best part about the work I do—I never stop learning. I went to Colorado School of Trade for my formal education, but think most gunsmiths would agree that you never stop learning. I was very fortunate to get a job right out of school with Gander Mountain and work with gunsmiths who had 20 or more years of experience.

Q: Why did you decide to become a gunsmith?
A: I have always loved guns and working with my hands, so gunsmithing was just a good fit. My best days are the ones when I get to see the most people and work on the most guns. Staying busy like I do keeps the work fun.

Q: What do you like most about working at Shoot Smart?
A: The people. I really enjoy meeting customers and working with my team. As my part of the business grows, I get to meet more people. Since I started, we’ve now grown busy enough for an additional helper, and I have really enjoyed showing him the ropes.

Q: Do you have any tips for new shooters about gunsmithing or gun maintenance?
A: Keep your guns clean! It is the easiest thing to do, and for a gunsmith, it’s the cause of many problems I see. If you don’t know how to clean your gun, ask a member of our team to show you. And if you don’t have the time, we can clean your gun in about 30 minutes or so in our cleaning tank. That will keep your valuable tools working when you need them most.

Farewell, Jerry!

June 3rd, 2014

May marks the departure of Jerry Mooneyham from the Shoot Smart Alliance location. As the original property owner, Jerry, owner of Mooneyham Brothers Patio Furniture, was one of the first people to believe in our project. He leased the property at 10305 North Freeway to us in July 2010. In May 2012, Jerry sold us the property, so that we could expand Shoot Smart by building the private suites, an extra classroom, and the original gunsmith shop. Since then, Jerry has stayed with us as our tenant. But more than that, Jerry has always been a supporter of our company.

Throughout the years, Jerry kept an eye on the facility, made sure the water well was working, helped us with maintenance of the property, and found vendors for just about every repair or improvement we needed; we will miss his jovial presence. As with all change, there are opportunities to grow, for us and for Jerry. We are planning to expand our parking lot, for openers. Jerry and his brother Jay have now moved to their new shop in Decatur, but you can always find them online at www.mooneyhambrothers.com.

Farewell, Jerry Mooneyham! We wish you the best of luck at your new location. Thank you for the fond memories and for your support.

CHL Corner: Civilian Safety Course

June 3rd, 2014

The use of deadly force should be your option of last resort. Using deadly force could result in the loss of another person’s life and subsequent actions can alter your life too. So it is only your best option once all others have been exhausted. Lesser force options that you may consider and learn about include, but are not limited to, verbalization, mental awareness, less than lethal objects, and physical force.

To help build your self-defense tool kit, Shoot Smart is offering a less-than-lethal class in conjunction with SABRE on Tuesday June 24th at 6:30pm. The Civilian Safety Awareness Program will teach you a safety mindset and how to adopt the SABRE Safety Plan to protect yourself and your family. You’ll participate in hands on training to help prepare you to escape a dangerous threat – skills you’ll be able call on if you ever find yourself in danger.

For more information on the class or to register, please visit us at http://www.shootsmartusa.com/learn and click the special events tab. Seats are limited so register today. And as always, if you have questions, feel free to ask. You can contact me at cassie@shootsmarttx.com.
