GUNSMITH FAQ

How often should I clean my gun?

Between 500 and 1000 rounds fired, depending on the ammunition and caliber of the firearm. Check with the gunsmith the next time you’re in and he’ll make a more specific recommendation based on the make and model of your gun.

What’s the best way to maintain my gun?

Use a bore snake to clean the magazine well, feed ramps, and barrel after every shooting session to lengthen the time between cleanings.

Can you fix my gun?

YES!

Can you install sights while I wait?

Yes, generally we can, depending on how busy the day is. We do not charge to install sights bought at Shoot Smart.

Can you clean my gun while I wait?

Yes, we usually can do an express clean for you while you wait.

Can you show me how to clean my specific make and model firearm?

Yes, you can schedule a private lesson with a gunsmith to learn how to dissemble, clean, lubricate, and reassemble your firearm.

Do you blue guns?

We can re-blue pistols, but our tank is not large enough for rifles.

Can you shorten or lighten the trigger pull on my gun?

Yes, we do a lot of trigger jobs to shorten or lighten the trigger pull. We can also install after-market trigger assemblies.

Can you build a custom rifle/AR-15 for me?

Yes! We would love to build a custom firearm for you.

What are my options if I want to add a scope to my rifle or handgun?

The gunsmith can consult with you to help you obtain the best scope for your intended use and budget.

Should I install a laser on my firearm?

We can help you understand the use of a laser and recommend a specific style for your firearm. We can also install the laser for you.

Can you help me improve my score as a competitor by modifying my firearm?

Yes, there are several ways we can help — recommending/installing new sights, customizing your trigger, changing the grip, stippling the grip, and more.

I bought this gun, but the fit isn’t perfect. Can you recommend a way to improve that?

Sometimes, it may be possible to change the grip pads on some models (Glock, Springfield, S&W) for a better fit, or shave the trigger guard. Sometimes, it’s just not the right gun for your hand.

Do you have a real (trained, experience) gunsmith or just armorers?

Our gunsmith graduated from a nationally known excellent gunsmith program at an accredited trade school and has trained other gunsmiths on our staff.

Do I need different sights? My aim is off.

We can help you solve this problem with either better sights or better instruction.

Why is my gun jamming?

It’s hard to tell without examining the gun and the shooter. We can figure out the cause of the jamming. If it’s the gun, we can correct problems with the feed ramp, extractor, and the like. If it’s the shooter, we can hook you up with proper instruction to correct the problem.

Can you install a muzzle break?

Yes, we can.

Can you thread the barrel for a suppressor or other device?

Yes, we can.

Do you do DuraCoat® or Cerakote® work?

We can customize your firearm using DuraCoat finishes.

What’s the turnaround time to get my gun back?

It depends on what service you need. Light cleanings, sight installations, and jamming problems can be handled immediately most of the time. Repairs take about 10 to 14 days. If we have it sooner, we’ll call you sooner.
